The PLEX Power & Control Range: From Boost to Power, Motors and Actuators
After more than seventeen years of building boost controllers, we’ve expanded into power distribution, with motor control on the way — and brought it all together under one category: Power & Control, a range of compact and highly-versatile modules for managing power, boost, motors and actuators on performance and race vehicles.
The category includes two boost controllers, the PBC PRO v2 and the EXP-Boost, which actually do more than their names suggest: alongside boost, they handle power distribution and actuator control, replacing several separate devices with one unit on the engine. Power distribution then stands on its own in our new PDM-13 — an ultra-compact solid-state module that takes over a car’s power distribution — switching, fusing and protecting every circuit electronically, and set entirely in software. And two more products will join the range later this year: a higher-capacity PDM for larger installations, and a smart module built for electronic motor and actuator control. Every module shares the same design approach and the same software, so you can pick the one the job requires, or run several together when it calls for more.
The Range Today
Three products are available now, with two more coming:
- PLEX EXP-Boost — a compact, display-free module combining boost control, power management and actuator control.
- PLEX PBC PRO v2 Kit — our flagship two-module system: EXP-Boost hardware by the engine, a 2.8″ display in the cabin, and a full data and performance package in the Plus version.
- PLEX PDM-13 — an ultra-compact solid-state Power Distribution Module for distributing and protecting vehicle power.
Forthcoming
These two new products will be revealed during the PMW Expo in November and launch later this year.
- PLEX MCM-10 — Fully configurable and ultra-compact, the MCM-10 is a dedicated motor control unit: eight bridge outputs — half- and full-bridge, combinable — delivering up to 75 A and switching to 10 kHz for demanding motor applications. Paired with a PDM-13 in a distributed layout, it wires even the most complex setups without the usual harness runs.
- PLEX PDM-38 — The PDM-38 is our high-capacity Power Distribution Module: 200 A continuous across 38 outputs, from 5 A switching lines up to 45 A PWM outputs with soft-start. It also carries eight half-bridge outputs that pair into full bridges, so it drives motors and actuators as well as distributing power — with twelve configurable inputs and dual FDCAN to tie it into the vehicle. Built for the larger cars, prototypes and complex installs the PDM-13 wasn’t meant to cover.
One platform, different jobs
The products control different things, but they’re built in a similar manner. Each is compact and rugged, made to mount close to the hardware it controls. Each communicates over CAN, which keeps the wiring short and lets the modules work together. And each is configured in PLEX Device Manager 2.0 — the same intuitive and versatile software behind our dashes, knock detection and combustion analysis.
That shared software matters more than it sounds. Instead of one program for the boost controller, another for the PDM and a third for the motor controller, there’s one environment and one way of working: you define the inputs, turn them into the logic you want, and use that to drive the outputs. Configure the job around the application, rather than bending the application to fit a fixed-function box.
PLEX PDM-13 — Compact & Versatile Power Distribution
An ultra-compact solid-state Power Distribution Module — power switching, fusing and protection handled electronically and set in software.
Solid-state PDMs aren’t new. MoTeC, Link, ECUMASTER and others have shipped them for years, and they’ve changed how serious race vehicles are wired. We spent a long time deciding what we’d do differently before we added ours.
What we did was make it the right size and the right shape for where power distribution actually needs to go. Thirteen individually configurable high-side outputs, 100 A of system capacity, in a 215-gram CNC-machined aluminium enclosure measuring 54 × 80 × 34 mm. There’s no smaller pro-level PDM in motorsport. One unit can run an entire motorcycle’s electrical system on its own. It drops into the tightest corner of a prototype where a larger unit won’t fit, or spreads across a car as several local units, each close to the loads it feeds — cutting harness weight and length instead of running every circuit back to one central box.
None of that limits how you configure it. Every output has its own current limit, electronic fuse behaviour, PWM, soft-start, inrush and reset strategy. Outputs group together for higher-demand loads, and built-in wiper and flasher modules save you building common logic from scratch. Every channel reports live over CAN-FD, so you can watch each output while the car runs.
PLEX EXP-Boost — One Module. Three Jobs.
A cutting-edge, pro-level standalone boost controller — with power management and actuator control built into the same module.
Boost is what most people fit it for: open- and closed-loop control with PID and feedforward, multiple presets and correction maps, driving up to two solenoids and two electric wastegates. But the same hardware also handles auxiliary power and actuators — jobs that would otherwise need separate devices.
Boost control
Open- and closed-loop regulation with correction strategies based on RPM, speed, gear, throttle, time and other CAN Bus or sensor inputs. A built-in 5-bar MAP and barometric sensor provide the pressure readings; extra inputs bring EGT and other data into the strategies and protection.
Power management
Four 15A outputs for pumps, fans, water injection, blow-off valves and boost solenoids. Behaviour is software-defined, not simple on/off, so timing and protection are set per output. The four share a common capacity, allocated across whatever the build needs.
Actuator control
Two H-bridge outputs for electric wastegates or DC motors, independent of the boost function — the same outputs drive any bidirectional motor or actuator that needs controlled operation.
Add the multipurpose inputs and fully configurable CAN, and the EXP-Boost is a general control module at heart — configured for whatever the build needs, with or without boost.
The PBC PRO v2 Kit is our flagship boost management system — a complete, driver-facing setup, with the same power and actuator control as the EXP-Boost built in.
The Kit is built as two modules. The Slave unit (EXP-Boost) mounts by the engine and handles all the connections: solenoids, wastegates, sensors, power outputs. A single CAN link runs to the Master unit in the cabin — a 2.8-inch sunlight-readable IPS display similar to the uSDM-200.
The two-module design keeps the control hardware at the engine. Only the CAN link and the display’s power run to the cabin, rather than every sensor and power wire, which makes for shorter wiring and a simpler install.
Because the Slave is the EXP-Boost, the Kit has the same control capability: open- and closed-loop boost control, four high-power outputs, H-bridge actuator control, blow-off and water-injection control, configurable inputs and user-defined CAN. The Master adds the display and interface on top.
Basic and Plus
Both use the same EXP-Boost Slave, so the boost control is identical — the difference is on the Master. Basic runs the complete control system on its touchscreen. Plus runs the same control hardware and adds a fully configurable dash logger with real-time performance monitoring — expanded data channels, GNSS lap timing, a performance meter, a 6-axis IMU and 3D boost-target correction — turning the Kit into a full track and performance tool.
It’s the version most customers choose.
Where to Begin
Wherever you are with a build — running a single PDM-13, adding boost control without a screen, or fitting the full Kit — the range is designed to fit what you’re already running and expand as you need.
That’s what Power & Control is: small, well-made units that work on their own and work better together. If you’re not sure which one fits, talk to us. We’d rather point you to the right unit than the biggest one. Full specs, datasheets and the configuration software are on each product page.
